Episode Notes

He gave away 99% of a company worth hundreds of millions and says his kids lost nothing.

Alan Barnhart capped his own lifestyle in 1986, before the money ever arrived.

Alan Barnhart and his brother started with ten employees and $1.5 million in revenue. Before they took over, they decided that if the business ever prospered they would not raise their own standard of living, and in 2008 they transferred the stock of the company into a ministry. In this conversation with Justin Forman, Alan explains why he calls that self-preservation rather than sacrifice, why he will not tell anyone how much to give, and why he believes leaving children a fortune is the riskier choice. He also gets into the mechanics most givers never run: the 30 to 40 percent the tax code adds to a gift made while you are alive, and the damage a large unilateral gift can do to the ministry receiving it.
