Jesus could have funded his own ministry. He chose not to, and Luke 8 names the three women who paid for it instead.

John Rinehart founded Gospel Patrons after learning who paid for the first English Bible, the Great Awakening, and Amazing Grace.

Most of us know the preachers. Almost nobody knows the people who funded them. William Tyndale had a London cloth merchant who housed him and paid for a translation that was illegal at the time. George Whitefield had an aristocrat. John Newton had a businessman who put Amazing Grace into print and paid to hand it out. The JESUS film, the most translated film in history, was funded by a couple sitting at the back of a room with five people in it. They later lost their fortune and still called it the best money they ever spent.

John’s argument to Justin Forman is that none of this is a footnote. It is the pattern. Radical generosity was normal Christianity in the book of Acts, giving is never a loss, and Jesus says the person who funds the work gets the same reward as the person who goes.
