SOLVING

Disasters
PROVIDING RELIEF IN THE UNEXPECTED
When natural disasters hit, devastation follows closely behind. What can we do better?

PSALM 46:1-3

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.”

For over 50 years, Samaritan’s Purse has followed God’s call to help victims of war, natural disasters, disease, and famine around the world.
$313 billion
—the total global economic loss due to natural disasters events worldwide in 2022.
Floods and earthquakes stole the lives of thousands of people in 2022 alone. Bureaucracy often makes government aid ineffective and cumbersome. And, more nimble and dynamic nonprofit organizations and businesses are often better positioned to respond quickly when disasters strike.

Before disasters strike, there is work governments and nonprofits can be doing to improve preparation and response plans. Effective planning can reduce risk and establish trust among the right organizations to accelerate disaster response. We can’t always predict when tragedies like this will strike, but we can improve how we prepare for and respond in a proactive way.

How can the Church support better disaster preparation? And, how can we respond to disasters even more forcefully?

Helping In Jesus’ Name

Leaving No One Lying in a Ditch

The story of the Good Samaritan compels Christ-followers to help those in desperate need wherever they might be. For over 50 years, Samaritan’s Purse has followed God’s call to help victims of war, natural disasters, disease, and famine around the world.

The Ebola Fighters

Dr. Kent Brantly of Samaritan’s Purse was one of only two physicians treating Ebola patients when the deadly disease broke out in Liberia. Rather than flee, he answered God’s call to stay and treat the epidemic. His decision to “serve in the dangerous places” made Dr. Brantly Time Magazine’s Person of Year. And it nearly cost him his life when he contracted the disease himself.

Digital Platform Makes Emergency Assistance Easier

World Vision pioneered a new approach to providing financial assistance to disaster survivors. Once registered, victims are able to receive mobile money. To date, over 10 million people have been registered with the platform and it’s now being used by 20 different relief organizations.
